Gov. Ivey Awards 11 Grants to Assist Domestic Violence Victims in north Alabama

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded 11 grants totaling just over $460,000 to serve victims of crimes including domestic violence and sexual assault and to train law enforcement officers investigating these cases.

“Victims of these terrible crimes deserve safe shelter and guidance as they seek justice and rebuild their lives,” Gov. Ivey said. “The organizations and governments funded by these grants have a proven track record of service for victims.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants with funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of these programs offering professional assistance to victims every step of the way, from initial response through prosecution,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

Below are the agencies receiving grants.

Crisis Services of North Alabama – $65,110 to serve adult victims of sexual assault in Cullman, Jackson, Limestone, Madison, Morgan and Winston counties. The grant will also fund education and training for law enforcement and forensic nurses.

2nd Chance Inc. – $20,110 to provide shelter and supportive services to domestic violence victims in Calhoun, Cleburne, Etowah and Talladega counties.

Lawrence County Commission – $62,000 for the Domestic Violence Unit of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office to provide services in domestic violence cases in the county, including guiding victims through the judicial process and attending court hearings.

Domestic Violence Crisis Services – $20,110 to assist victims of crimes including physical assault, domestic violence and elder abuse and neglect in Cherokee, DeKalb and Marshall counties.

Safeplace Inc. – $36,110 for safe housing, outreach, public awareness and intervention for domestic violence victims in Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Marion and Winston counties.

AshaKiran – $41,110 to provide education initiatives, awareness campaigns, information distributions and referral services for victims and those at risk of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in Jackson, Jefferson, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Mobile, Montgomery and Morgan counties.

Victim Services of Cullman, better known as The Willow Path – $10,110 for crisis response and recovery programs for individuals and families affected by domestic violence in Cullman County.

Marshall County Commission – $49,710 to provide prosecutors for domestic violence cases, coordinating services from specialized victim services providers and offering referrals to other community resources in Marshall County.

Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office – $59,710 for One Place of the Shoals Family Justice Center to serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse and elder abuse within the county.

Marion County Commission – $57,710 for a project offering community education and awareness, centralized prosecution and law enforcement training to decrease domestic violence offenses and increase reporting of incidents. The project serves Marion and Winston counties.

Calhoun County Commission – $40,000 for services including personal advocacy, assistance navigating the justice system and assistance filing compensation claims for victims of domestic violence in Calhoun and Cleburne counties.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
