Authorities Warn of New Text Scam Targeting Alabama Residents

Law enforcement agencies across Alabama are warning residents about a new text message scam that has recently begun circulating in several communities.

According to officials, the scam involves a message claiming to be from the “St. Louis County Municipal Court,” an entity authorities say does not exist. The message is labeled as a “Final Notice — Court Enforcement Action” and alleges violations such as failure to pay electronic tolls, toll evasion, parking infractions, and speeding.

Authorities note several clear red flags in the message. There is no St. Louis County in Alabama, and the document reportedly includes an incorrect version of the Alabama state seal while listing a court location in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition, the message references a legal code — “32 Ala. Code 35-2277” — that does not appear to exist.

The scam urges recipients to take immediate action by paying fines or appearing in court for a scheduled hearing. It also threatens consequences for failing to respond, including additional fees, suspension of a driver’s license, and possible contempt of court charges.

Officials stress that recipients should not engage with the message in any way, particularly by scanning any QR codes included in the text.

Residents who receive the message are advised to delete it immediately and avoid clicking links or providing any personal information. Authorities continue to remind the public to remain cautious and verify any suspicious communications claiming to be from government agencies.
