RAINSVILLE, Ala.– Authorities have identified the man involved in the multi-county police chase reported Monday.

Police say 45-year-old Robert Parks of Rossville, Georgia allegedly stole a vehicle from a gas station before driving recklessly eastbound on Alabama Highway 35 toward DeKalb County.

The pursuit continued along Highway 75, prompting law enforcement to issue a public alert asking drivers to avoid the Rainsville Crossing area.
When officers approached the stolen vehicle, they reportedly observed Parks with a firearm. Officers gave verbal commands for him to lower the weapon and exit the vehicle while nearby businesses were placed under a shelter-in-place order.
After a 45-minute standoff, authorities say Parks suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Charges against Parks are pending as the incident remains under investigation.
