Etowah County Sheriff’s Office Expands Aviation Unit
Positions Fleet to Support Two Operational Helicopters
Gadsden-The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office says its Aviation Unit has taken major steps to strengthen its long-term capabilities by expanding its helicopter fleet through the federal 10-33 surplus program at little cost to local taxpayers.
Earlier this month, the agency added a surplus OH-58C helicopter equipped with a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) system. Officials say the technology will enhance the unit’s ability to locate missing persons, track suspects and support a wide range of law enforcement missions.
Prior to that addition, Aviation Unit members Dustin Watkins, Jameson Jenkins, Greg Harwood and Sam Horn traveled to Whiting Field in Santa Rosa County, Florida, where they accepted delivery of two TH-57 helicopters from the U.S. Navy, also through the 10-33 program. All three aircraft were obtained at no purchase cost beyond minor transfer and shipping fees.

Sheriff’s officials say the three-aircraft fleet allows the unit to maintain two operational helicopters while keeping parts available for maintenance and repairs. The expanded capability is expected to support proactive patrol flights and provide more opportunities for ongoing training.
The Sheriff’s Office credited Aviation Unit leader Danny Fincher for guiding the program’s growth and helping secure the aircraft. Sheriff Jonathon Horton said the expansion reflects a continued commitment to equipping the department with the resources needed to serve Etowah County and surrounding communities for years to come.
