Rome Police Warn Residents of Utility Disconnect Phone Scam

Rome,GA– The Rome Police Department is alerting residents to a recent surge in fraudulent phone calls in which scammers pose as utility representatives and claim that a customer’s electricity will be disconnected unless an immediate payment is made.

Rome Police Warn Residents of Utility Disconnect Phone Scam

According to officials, callers are pressuring residents to pay using CashApp, gift cards, wire transfers, or other untraceable methods. Police stress that these demands are a clear sign of a scam.

Authorities remind the public that legitimate utility providers do not abruptly cut off service without first sending mailed notices and making multiple verified attempts to contact customers.

Residents who receive one of these calls are urged to hang up immediately and contact their utility company using the phone number printed on their actual billing statement—not one provided by the caller.

The Rome Police Department advises the community to stay alert, avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone, and report suspicious calls to local law enforcement.
