Warriors win back-and-forth football battle with Oneonta on homecoming

CENTRE – Keyshawn Woods accumulated 218 yards on 26 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead the Class 4A, No. 4 Cherokee County Warriors to a 42-29 Region 6 football win over Oneonta on homecoming Friday night.

Woods’ touchdown runs came from 50, 12, 27, 18 and 20 yards. He put the Warriors (2-1, 1-0) on the board in the first quarter. Oneonta (1-1, 0-1) countered with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Greer Phillips to Maddox Byrd. The ensuing conversion was no good, keeping the Warriors in front 7-6 after a quarter of play.

Adam Griffith extended Cherokee County’s lead to 14-6 on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, but Oneonta battled back with Mason Chambers’ 10-yard score to make it a 14-12 game.

Woods scored his second touchdown of the game on a 12-yard run later in the second quarter. Hugh Miller’s extra point provided the Warriors a 21-12 lead.

The Redskins tightened the gap again on Cy Dilliapree’s 13-yard touchdown run just before halftime, making the score 21-19 Warriors.

Oneonta took the lead in the third quarter following Jaxon Ballington’s 41-yard interception return for a touchdown. The point after gave the Redskins a 26-21 advantage.

The Warriors regained the lead later in the third on Woods’ 27-yard touchdown run. Following Miller’s PAT, Cherokee County was back in front 28-26.

Oneonta went back out in front 29-28 early in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Nicolas Cervantes, but Woods put the game away with his final two touchdown runs of the game from 18 and 20 yards for the final.

Griffith added 99 yards through the air on 5-of-9 passing for the Warriors. Phillips was 17-of-28 for 202 yards and a touchdown passing for the Redskins. Byrd finished with seven catches for 104 yards and a score.

Cherokee County travels to Etowah next Friday.
