Cedar Bluff Police Officer Resigns; Council Holds Special Meeting
Cedar Bluff — A resignation in the Cedar Bluff Police Department has prompted town officials to meet in a special session this week.
Mayor Tammy Crane called a special town council meeting for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a letter of resignation from Officer Shane Butler, who submitted a two-week notice effective August 19 through September 2.
Once the meeting was called to order, the council immediately entered into executive session at the mayor’s request. The closed session lasted one hour and 37 minutes. When council members reconvened, they voted to formally accept Officer Butler’s resignation before adjourning.
Meanwhile, in nearby Collinsville, Chief Andy Brown informed his city council Monday afternoon that Butler had been hired to fill the department’s fifth slot and will serve on the night shift.
Officer Butler had been serving Cedar Bluff as the town’s canine handler, working alongside K9 Dona. With his departure, town leaders must now determine the future of the K9 program — including whether to retire Dona or assign her to a new handler. That decision will be addressed at upcoming council meetings following the municipal elections.
The next regular meeting of the Cedar Bluff Town Council is scheduled for Monday, September 8, at 5 p.m.
