The National Weather Service is advising people to be aware of excessive heat and reduce your exposure during the peak heating time of the afternoon.
Afternoon heat indices are expected to climb to near 100° both today and tomorrow, resulting in a moderate risk for heat-related impacts across parts of Central Alabama.
This level of heat can affect a wide range of individuals, particularly those without access to adequate cooling or hydration. Impacts may also be felt in some healthcare systems and heat-sensitive industries.
Stay safe during a heatwave, prioritize staying hydrated, seeking cool environments, and dressing appropriately. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours, and be mindful of those who are most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
You need to drink enough water to prevent heat illness. An average person needs to drink about 3/4 of a gallon of water daily. Everyone’s needs may vary.
- You can check that you are getting enough water by noting your urine color. Dark yellow may indicate you are not drinking enough.
- Avoid sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.
- If you are sweating a lot, combine water with snacks or a sports drink to replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
