Leesburg, AL — A high-speed police pursuit that began Wednesday afternoon in Leesburg ended dramatically across the state line in Georgia, with the suspect taken into custody after a multi-agency manhunt.
According to authorities, the incident began around 3:50 p.m. when Leesburg Police attempted to stop a silver Infinity identified as stolen through the department’s Flock Camera system. The driver refused to comply, leading officers on a high-speed chase toward Centre via Highway 411.
The suspect continued onto the Chesnut bypass, nearly colliding with at least one vehicle, then fled down Cedar Bluff Road, traveling along Highways 9 and 68 before crossing into Georgia. Law enforcement agencies involved in the pursuit included Leesburg, Centre, Cedar Bluff Police, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, and Georgia authorities.
Officers deployed spike strips on two occasions to disable the fleeing vehicle, but both attempts were unsuccessful. The chase came to an end near Looney Road, where Alabama Highway transitions into Georgia State Route 100, in front of Pettyjohn Construction. There, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
After the crash, the suspect fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, reportedly carrying a backpack. The scene of the crash required a temporary road closure due to downed power lines caused by the incident.
Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter and deployed tracking dogs to search the area. Residents were advised to stay indoors and ensure that vehicles and homes were secure during the manhunt.
The search concluded successfully around 7:00 p.m. when Georgia law enforcement officers located and arrested the suspect. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or additional charges, but the investigation remains ongoing.
