COLLINSVILLE– A new I-59 traffic pattern is now in effect south of Collinsville as a major reconstruction project enters its second phase.
The Alabama Department of Transportation shifted southbound traffic Friday afternoon onto one lane of the northbound roadway. The shift begins just south of Exit 205 at SR-68 and continues to milepost 199.5.
Concrete barriers separate northbound and southbound traffic through the shared roadway. Meanwhile, the southbound side will remain closed for about a year while crews rebuild approximately five miles.
Contractor Vulcan Materials is completing the work as part of a $40.7 million project. Overall, the project will reconstruct nearly 11 miles of I-59 southbound through DeKalb and Etowah counties.
First Phase Opened in July
The first phase rebuilt five miles between mileposts 199.5 and 194.5. That segment, south of Stephens Gap Road and north of Reece City, reopened in July.
However, motorists should expect single-lane closures there until crews finish striping.
Wider I-59 Reconstruction Continues
Since 2020, ALDOT has awarded $239.2 million across six I-59 reconstruction and rehabilitation contracts in the two counties. So far, those projects have placed 35 reconstructed miles into service, with another 25 miles under construction or contract.
The Collinsville-to-Reece City project remains active, with completion projected for spring 2027. In addition, ALDOT expects to let a seventh project late this year or early next year.
That project would reconstruct I-59 northbound from north of SR-68 in Collinsville to Exit 218 at SR-35 in Fort Payne.
