ATTALLA– Attalla Fire & Rescue is congratulating Firefighter Garrett Gibbs after he passed the National Registry Paramedic Certification Examination and earned his Alabama Paramedic license.

The accomplishment followed extensive classroom instruction, clinical training, field experience, and preparation. According to the department, Gibbs’ advanced education will strengthen its emergency response capabilities and improve the care available to the Attalla community.

“Garrett’s commitment to advancing his education and skills strengthens our department and improves the level of care we are able to provide to our community,” Attalla Fire & Rescue stated.

What Paramedic Certification Requires

Becoming a paramedic involves far more than passing a single examination.

According to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, candidates pursuing National Registry Paramedic certification must already hold an EMT-level license or certification.

Candidates must also complete an accredited paramedic education program. During that program, students develop and demonstrate competency through classroom education and supervised experiences in clinical and field settings.

Those experiences help students apply their knowledge while caring for patients under the supervision of experienced medical professionals. They also provide exposure to the unpredictable conditions paramedics may face during real emergencies.

After completing the educational and competency requirements, candidates must pass the National Registry Paramedic Certification Examination.

Examination Tests Knowledge and Clinical Judgment

The current paramedic examination was introduced in July 2024. It places significant emphasis on how candidates assess a situation, recognize important information, make treatment decisions, and evaluate the patient’s response.

According to the National Registry’s paramedic examination plan, the test covers six major areas:

• Airway, respiration, and ventilation
• Cardiology and resuscitation
• Trauma
• Medical emergencies, obstetrics, and gynecology
• EMS operations
• Clinical judgment

Pediatric care is included throughout the examination. Candidates may also encounter interactive questions and emergency scenarios covering the response while traveling to a call, conditions at the scene, and decisions made after leaving the scene.

Clinical judgment accounts for the largest portion of the examination. Those questions measure a candidate’s ability to recognize and analyze clues, identify a likely problem, select an appropriate response, take action, and evaluate the results.

The exam also measures communication, leadership, documentation, professionalism, and knowledge of medical and legal standards.

Certification and State Licensure

National Registry certification and an Alabama license serve different purposes.

The National Registry evaluates whether a candidate has demonstrated the competency expected of an entry-level paramedic. However, national certification alone is not a license to practice.

The Alabama Department of Public Health’s Office of EMS oversees the state licensing process. Attalla Fire & Rescue reported that Gibbs completed that process and earned his Alabama Paramedic license.

Paramedic training prepares emergency responders to make critical decisions in fast-moving situations, often before a patient reaches a hospital. Therefore, adding another licensed paramedic expands the advanced medical knowledge available during calls involving serious illnesses, injuries, and other emergencies.

Attalla Fire & Rescue said the department is proud of Gibbs and congratulated him on the well-earned accomplishment.
