ANNISTON– Calhoun County Commission Chairman Lee Patterson has earned a national leadership role representing county governments across Alabama and the United States.

County officials announced Patterson’s election to the National Association of Counties Board of Directors. NACo members elected him during the organization’s 2026 Annual Conference.

The position will allow Patterson to participate in national discussions about policies that affect counties and the residents they serve. It also gives Calhoun County and Alabama greater representation within the organization.

National Role for Calhoun County

The National Association of Counties represents the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs. The organization brings county leaders together to address issues involving infrastructure, economic development, public safety, healthcare, emergency management, and local government services.

NACo’s official governance information says its Board of Directors establishes the organization’s strategic goals, policies, and priorities. The board also oversees NACo’s business, property, member services, and certain policy decisions between annual conferences.

Elected and appointed county officials from active member counties make up the national board. State county associations, NACo affiliates, caucuses, and the organization’s president help select its members.

Patterson will work alongside county officials from across the country. Together, they will help shape NACo’s priorities and strengthen its advocacy on issues that affect local governments.

Patterson Brings Previous NACo Experience

Patterson has already served in national county leadership positions.

In 2023, NACo reappointed him to a one-year term as vice chair of its Rural Action Caucus. He also served as a member of the organization’s Veterans and Military Services Committee, according to a previous report on his NACo service.

The Rural Action Caucus focuses on challenges facing rural communities. Those issues include broadband access, roads and bridges, healthcare, economic development, and other essential county services.

Patterson has also advocated for infrastructure investment, economic development, public safety, and efficient county services during his tenure as commission chairman.

His election places a Calhoun County official among the leaders who guide NACo’s national work. County officials said the appointment will provide Alabama with a stronger voice when county priorities reach the national level.

The National Association of Counties describes its board as the governing body responsible for shaping the organization’s goals and representing the interests of member counties nationwide.
