Fort Payne-The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office recently conducted Phase II of its Shepherd’s Watch Church Security Training Program. The program provides churches with professional and realistic security training.

Phase I focused on threat assessments, security planning and emergency response procedures. Participants also learned about communication and security protocols tailored to their churches.
Phase II moved participants from classroom instruction into practical scenarios. The exercises tested their decision-making and response skills during simulated critical incidents.

Captain Nathaniel Bates directed the training. Bates serves as the program’s lead instructor and deputy commander of the DeKalb County Special Response Team.
Participants completed force-on-force exercises using nonlethal training ammunition. The controlled scenarios required them to communicate, make decisions under stress and protect innocent lives.
Participants later moved to the firing range for a series of firearm drills. The exercises emphasized marksmanship, target discrimination and safe weapon handling.

The sheriff’s office said the training helps bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real-world application. It also gives church security teams practical skills for responding during high-stress situations.
“The safety of our churches and the families who gather to worship is a responsibility we take seriously,” DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said. “I am incredibly thankful for the men and women who have stepped forward to serve their congregations with professionalism, humility and a willingness to train.”

Welden said preparedness remains one of the most valuable tools for protecting innocent lives. He also reaffirmed the sheriff’s office’s commitment to supporting local faith communities.
“Together, we can help ensure our places of worship remain safe, secure and welcoming for everyone,” Welden said.
