GADSDEN– The Gadsden Fire Department responded to a report of stranded people aboard a paddle boat on the Coosa River this weekend during severe thunderstorm conditions.

The call came in at approximately 2:30 p.m., prompting the response of Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Battalion 2 to the area upstream from the bait shop.

Despite the dangerous weather, firefighters from Engine 1 launched the department’s rescue boat and began searching for the reported occupants. During the search, crews learned the people aboard the paddle boat had safely made it to a nearby residence.

Firefighters later located the paddle boat abandoned upstream and towed it back to the boat docks. No injuries were reported.

The Gadsden Fire Department said its personnel remain prepared to respond in all weather conditions, including severe thunderstorms and extreme summer heat, to protect and serve the community.

The department also reminds anyone planning to spend time on the water to closely monitor weather conditions before heading out. Sudden storms can develop quickly and create dangerous conditions for even experienced boaters.
