GADSDEN – As National Safety Month continues and the Independence Day holiday approaches, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents and visitors to make water safety a top priority before heading to area lakes and rivers.
With increased boating and recreational traffic expected across Etowah County during the July 4 holiday weekend, the Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public that simple safety precautions can help prevent accidents and save lives.
Among the agency’s recommendations is the importance of wearing a life jacket whenever on the water. While Alabama law requires all children under the age of eight to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket aboard any vessel, the Sheriff’s Office recommends that everyone have a properly fitted life jacket readily available and wear one whenever possible.
Officials also stress that boating under the influence is both illegal and dangerous. The Sheriff’s Office notes that impaired boating remains one of the leading causes of boating fatalities and encourages boaters to designate a sober operator before leaving the dock.
The agency is also reminding those enjoying the Coosa River and other waterways to be aware of changing water conditions. River currents can become stronger and more unpredictable, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall.
Families are encouraged to closely supervise children and inexperienced swimmers, especially during crowded conditions. The Sheriff’s Office recommends designating a “water watcher” whose sole responsibility is keeping an eye on those in the water.
Before heading out, boaters are also encouraged to file a float plan by letting a family member or friend know where they are going and when they expect to return.
The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office hopes everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable Independence Day holiday and encourages residents to make responsible decisions while spending time on the water this summer.
