DeKalb SRT Assists in Resolving Armed Mental Health Crisis Near Rainsville

RAINSVILLE — A law enforcement operation in the Shiloh community of Rainsville on Monday afternoon ended with an intoxicated man being taken into custody and transported to a local hospital following reports of threats of self-harm and gunfire.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office initially advised the public to avoid the area around the 700 block of Tumlin Road while deputies and other agencies responded to what was described as an active law enforcement situation. Authorities emphasized at the time that there was no threat to the public.

According to a later update from the Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at approximately 12:45 p.m. on June 9, when DeKalb County deputies, along with officers from the Fyffe, Powell, Geraldine, and Rainsville police departments, responded to reports of an intoxicated 60-year-old man who was firing a pistol and making threats of self-harm.

As the situation unfolded, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) was called to the scene. Authorities attempted to negotiate with the man before ultimately deploying a less-lethal device to safely subdue him.

DeKalb Ambulance Service responded to the scene and transported the man to DeKalb Regional Hospital. The Sheriff’s Office reported that he sustained minor injuries.

Officials stated the situation was resolved without further incident. No injuries to law enforcement personnel or members of the public were reported.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identity of the individual involved. The incident remains under investigation.
