South Rome Woman Charged After Vehicle Strikes Crowd; Second Arrest Made in Shooting Incident

ROME, Ga. — A South Rome woman is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly driving a vehicle into a crowd of people during an altercation early Saturday morning, seriously injuring at least one person, according to reporting by the Rome News-Tribune and Rome Police Department reports.

Police responded at approximately 12:06 a.m. Saturday to Branham Avenue following reports of gunshots and a woman being struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers reportedly found a large crowd gathered around a woman suffering from severe head trauma.

According to the Rome News-Tribune, witnesses told police an argument had taken place in front of a residence located at 507 Branham Avenue. During the incident, a woman involved in the dispute allegedly entered a vehicle and drove directly into a crowd of people.

Authorities identified the driver as 25-year-old Rodneyshia Jermayian Shonta Dennis. According to police reports cited by the Rome News-Tribune, Dennis has been charged with felony aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and serious injury by vehicle.

She also faces misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence, and possession of an open container.

Investigators allege that after the argument, Dennis went to a nearby parking lot, entered a black Nissan, and then drove into the crowd, striking two individuals before returning the vehicle to the parking lot.

Police later stopped Dennis and another woman as they attempted to leave the area in a separate vehicle.

The victim who suffered head trauma was transported by emergency medical personnel to a local hospital and underwent emergency surgery. According to the Rome News-Tribune, a family member said Monday that the victim had since returned home and was resting.

Authorities have not determined whether the victims were involved in the original altercation or were bystanders.

Police reports also indicate that during the incident, a man allegedly fired multiple shots at the black Nissan as it drove through the crowd. No gunshot injuries were reported, though the vehicle was struck several times.

According to the Rome News-Tribune, 42-year-old Christopher Lamont Darden has been charged with felony aggravated assault in connection with the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing by the Rome Police Department.
