BrushPile Fishing’s Russ Bailey Highlights Weiss Lake Experience, Academy, and Crappie Fishing Innovation During WEIS Radio Interview

CENTRE- WEIS Radio recently welcomed Russ Bailey of BrushPile Fishing to the Merry Jerry Morning Show with Jerry Baker on Friday, April 24, for a discussion on fishing, filming, and the continued popularity of Weiss Lake among anglers.

Bailey was joined in studio by local guide Darrell Baker, who has been assisting with BrushPile Fishing productions and the BrushPile Academy. The pair recently completed filming a television episode together, which is scheduled to air in early 2027 on the BrushPile Fishing Facebook page and YouTube channel. Bailey noted that the current visit to the area has included several days of fishing on Weiss Lake, following a previous stop on Neely Henry Lake. He said his first experience in the region years ago came with little familiarity, but over time he has grown to appreciate the lake and now considers it one of his favorite destinations, citing both the fishing and friendships developed locally.
During the interview, Bailey also discussed BrushPile Academy, an instructional program designed for anglers of varying skill levels. The academy provides classroom instruction along with on-the-water training, with food and lodging included for participants. Classes are intentionally kept small, typically around a dozen students, to maintain a more personal, one-on-one learning environment.
Bailey said participants have responded positively to their experience on Weiss Lake, often noting the area’s natural beauty and favorable conditions during their stay. He also commented on recent weather, saying this trip has featured some of the best conditions he has experienced in the region, including lower wind levels than usual.

Local guide Darrell Baker, who has participated in multiple BrushPile filming projects, said his involvement in the academy has been a rewarding experience. He emphasized the value of spending one-on-one time on the water with students and helping them refine or learn new fishing techniques. He also noted that the program provides a well-rounded experience, with all arrangements handled for participants.
Bailey credited advancements in fishing technology, particularly LiveScope sonar systems, as major game-changers in the sport, impacting both tournament competition and recreational fishing by allowing anglers to locate and target fish more precisely. He acknowledged, however, that success is never guaranteed, adding that even when fish are visible, catching them can still be a challenge.
Both Bailey and Baker reflected on the enjoyment of time spent on the water, even during slower fishing conditions, emphasizing appreciation for the natural surroundings.
Bailey said Weiss Lake remains one of his favorite fishing destinations and praised local hospitality, accommodations, and scenery. He added that he had previously considered relocating to the area but said family considerations ultimately kept him from doing so.
