Corey Abernathy Honored by Cherokee County During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

Centre- Cherokee County E911 and the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency are recognizing local 911 dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, highlighting the critical role dispatchers play in public safety operations.

As part of the observance, officials are spotlighting members of their communications team, including Corey Abernathy, one of the voices behind emergency calls in Cherokee County.

Corey Abernathy Honored by Cherokee County During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

Abernathy has served as a 911 dispatcher since November 2024, bringing with him an extensive background in public safety and emergency response. Prior to joining Cherokee County E911, he worked for five years as a Weapons of Mass Destruction and Hazardous Materials (WMD/HAZMAT) Instructor with the Center for Domestic Preparedness. He also dedicated 11 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Centre Fire Department.

In addition to his civilian service, Abernathy served in the United States Army from 2007 to 2019, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He is now medically retired from military service.

A lifelong resident of Cherokee County, Abernathy takes pride in serving and protecting the community he calls home. Officials say his experience, dedication, and calm presence make him a vital part of the county’s emergency response system.

Cherokee County E911 and EMA expressed their appreciation for Abernathy’s continued service, thanking him for his commitment and contributions to public safety.
