DeKalb County Manhunt Underway After Deputy-Involved Shooting in Powell

Powell-DeKalb County law enforcement agencies are engaged in an active manhunt in Powell following a deputy-involved shooting during an attempted warrant arrest Tuesday evening.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred near Jones Road and Barry Street, where deputies attempted to take a suspect into custody. The individual, identified as Gary Jody Childers, fled on foot into a heavily wooded area after the encounter, prompting an extensive search effort. No injuries to officers were reported.

Childers is described as a white male with a beard. He was last seen wearing dark blue jeans, a black jacket or raincoat, and a black boggan. Authorities say he is considered armed, and residents in the surrounding area are urged to exercise caution.

In an alert Tuesday night, DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency officials advised residents near Jones Street and Barry Street to remain aware of their surroundings and immediately contact 911 if Childers is spotted. “Do not approach the subject,” the alert stated.

As of 9:20 p.m., emergency officials reported no new developments and confirmed that the search operation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
