Special Called Meeting Draws Heated Discussions

Special Called Meeting Of Cedar Bluff Town Council

During the regular Town Council meeting Monday afternoon, the Council failed to reach agreement on 3 items so Mayor Crane called a “Special Meeting” of the Council for Wednesday at 4:00 pm.

The first item on the Agenda was approval of the Financial Report for July. It was approved without any issue. The next item on the agenda was an added item, the purchase of a new air compressor for the Fire Department. After discussion, it was approved with the purchase from Amazon in the amount of $890.92.

The next item of business was tabled from Monday’s meeting. It was the bill from Terrance Dixon in the amount of $7500 for dirt work at the Police Department. At times, the discussion became heated between Council Members Bond and Higgins, Dixon and a member of the audience.  After Mayor Crane restored order, a motion was made and seconded to pay Dixon $7500 for his work. The measure was approved.

Another added item was the purchase of tires for Engine 61. After a spirited discussion, the 4 tires were approved in the amount of $2387 from O.K. Tire of Centre.

Another item tabled from Monday’s meeting was the purchase of an engine for the Fire Department’s brush truck when Council Member Bond said he thought they needed another quote. Bond acquired a quote and the Fire Department obtained another quote also. After reviewing the quotes, Council Member Bond made a motion to use the original quote presented on Monday in the amount of $10,550 from Stroked Out Diesel in Piedmont.

The last item to be addressed was a pay raise for Interim Town Clerk and Court Magistrate, Jenni Burt. Immediately the Council went into executive session to discuss the good name and character of an employee. After about a 20 minute session, the council reconvened and a motion and second was made to give Burt a $5.00 per hour pay raise for doing three jobs. In addition to the two previously listed, she is also the Election Manager for the upcoming municipal on August 26th.

The next regular meeting of the Cedar Bluff Town Council is September 8th at 5 pm in the Council Chambers.
