Throughout the month of April, Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is proud to shine a spotlight on the outstanding leaders who work tirelessly to protect and serve our community. Join us as we recognize the dedication, experience, and leadership of public safety professionals across Cherokee County.
Today, we are honored to highlight Cherokee County Rescue Squad Captain Danny Smith
Captain Danny Smith, a lifelong resident of Cherokee County and graduate of Cherokee County High School, has dedicated more than five decades to public service and life-saving efforts across the region.
Danny began his remarkable career in 1972 when he joined the Cherokee County Rescue Squad. Over the past 53 years, his commitment and leadership have been unwavering. He has served in numerous officer roles and has led the organization as Captain for the last 45 years — a testament to the respect and trust he has earned within the rescue community.
Captain Smith’s specialized expertise includes:
Auto Extrication
Water Rescue Operations (including boat operations, water recovery, swift water rescue, and rescue diving)
High Angle Rescue
Cave Rescue
Confined Space Rescue
Search and Rescue Operations
A lifelong learner and mentor, he holds multiple instructor certifications, allowing him to train the next generation of rescuers in high-angle techniques, vehicle extrication, water rescues, and EMS continuing education. For over 40 years, he has been licensed as an EMT-Intermediate by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Beyond Cherokee County, Captain Smith’s impact has been felt statewide. He is a Lifetime Member of the Alabama Association of Rescue Squads, where he has held every executive leadership position, including multiple terms as President, and continues to serve as Chairman of various committees and as an advisor to the Executive Board.
In addition to his work in rescue services, Danny enjoyed a distinguished 36-year career in law enforcement. He served as a Criminal Investigator and later as Chief Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office of the 9th Judicial Circuit. His training includes graduation from the Northeast Alabama Police Academy, Jacksonville State University, and the elite FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Among his many achievements, Captain Smith co-founded Cherokee Emergency Medical Services, where he served as Office Manager from 1999 to 2019. His dedication has earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious United States President’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2022), multiple Rescuer of the Year honors, and recognition as Investigator of the Year by the Alabama District Attorney’s Association.
Through his enduring leadership, mentorship, and passion for public safety, Captain Danny Smith has profoundly shaped emergency services in Cherokee County and beyond, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence, compassion, and community spirit.
