The latest school report cards are in, and statewide Alabama schools are showing some promising signs of improvement.
The state report, issued yearly by the Alabama Department of Education, captures academic achievement, growth, and other measures of school performance during the 2023-24 academic school year, such as college and career readiness and chronic absenteeism.
Overall, Alabama schools earned an 85, or a “B” grade, in 2023-24, which is a two-point increase from 2022-23 and the state’s highest score since the department of education established a uniform grading system in 2018.
Just shy of the state average, Cherokee County Schools also earned a “B” grade, receiving an 84 overall, down two points from an 86 score the previous year.
Individually, the system saw six of its county schools also earning a “B” grade, with one receiving a “C” grade; two schools saw increases, while four dipped slightly and one held steady.
Cedar Bluff School’s score of 89 ranked the highest of the seven county schools, while Gaylesville School was a close second at 88.
Centre Elementary School earned an 85 grade, Sand Rock School held steady at 84, and Spring Garden School scored an 83.
Centre Middle School scored an 81, while Cherokee County High School received a 73.
Neighboring Piedmont City Schools, earned “All-As,” scoring a 97 overall, in which Piedmont Elementary School, Piedmont Middle School, and Piedmont High School received a 97, 95, and 93 respectively.
Calhoun County and DeKalb County Schools each scored an 85 overall, with Collinsville School earning an 84, while Etowah County Schools received an overall score of 86.
