Inmate Killed in Fight at Hays State Prison in Neighboring Chattooga County, Georgia

An inmate named Lawrence Williams from Lowndes County, Georgia was recently killed in a fight at Hays State Prison located in Trion – across the state line in Chattooga County, Georgia.  The incident occurred just last week, and the cause of death is still under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed Williams’ death – and his body was sent for further examination to determine the official cause of death.  The Office of “Professional Standards” is conducting an investigation into the incident, but details remain limited due to the ongoing “nature of the investigation”.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as there have been at least 44 homicides in Georgia prisons this year – compared to a total of 38 last year (2023).

Hays State Prison, where the incident took place, was built back in 1989, and houses inmates considered either dangerous or high-risk.  There are a total of 34 state prisons in Georgia – housing 47,000 felony offenders.

We’ll have additional information as the investigation continues.
