McCord’s Fire Department Urges Residents to Make Sure ALL of Your Smoke Alarms are Working

The McCord’s Fire Department Urges Residents to Make Sure That ALL of Your Smoke Alarms are Working

The theme for “Fire Prevention Week” (through October 12th) is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for YOU!”

The men and women of McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association, the official sponsor of “Fire Prevention Week” for more than 100 years – to promote this year’s campaign – one which works to educate EVERYONE about the vast importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association smoke alarms will reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54%).

Meanwhile roughly – three out of five fire deaths – happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

The McCord’s Fire Department is now encouraging EVERYONE to actively support their 2024 theme, “Smoke alarms: Make Them Work for YOU!”

According to Chief Rich Lindsey, with the McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, says “Working alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely and this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a terrific way to remind everyone, of these messages and to act on them.”

McCord’s Fire Department Offers These Key Smoke Alarm Safety Tips and Guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms always meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

To ensure that all residents have smoke alarms that work, McCord’s Fire Department is offering smoke alarm installation and testing, to residents during Fire Prevention Week.
