On Friday afternoon, Floyd County Emergency Management reported the crash of a dump truck,, striking a power pole; that – at the intersection of Highway 53 and Shannon Road Northeast. The incident with the dump truck, caused that power pole to snap, and in turn bring down power lines across that roadway forcing a complete and total closure of all lanes on Highway 53 in the area, and the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency also reported that a small grass fire was ignited after the power pole snapped.
All of the outbound traffic from Rome, Georgia – was detoured onto West Hermitage Road, while all inbound drivers were forced to make a U-Turn back onto Highway 53 (or get onto Shannon Road Northeast).
The accident resulted in power outages for many surrounding residents, and also AT&T internet service disruptions for a period of time.
