Wilson’s 3 TD passes in second half pulls Piedmont away from Saks

ANNISTON – Piedmont senior quarterback Cole Wilson threw three of his four touchdown passes in the second half, lifting the Bulldogs to a 34-13 football win at Saks on Friday night.

Wilson finished the game completing 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 185 yards. Hayes Gunn led the Bulldog ground game with 19 carries for 93 yards and a score.

Saks scored first with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter. LaJuan Curry had a 13-yard touchdown run to put the Wildcats up 7-0. Piedmont countered with Wilson’s first touchdown pass, which went for 59 yards to Ishmael Bethel to tie the game at 7.

Zaiden Mays put the Wildcats back out in front on a 29-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The extra point was no good, keeping the score at 13-7 with 7:05 remaining in the first half.

Piedmont tied the game again right before halftime on Gunn’s 2-yard touchdown run. The point after was blocked as the two teams went into halftime tied at 13.

A pair of Wilson touchdown passes to Rollie Pinto in the third quarter put Piedmont out in front 27-13. Those passes covered 46 and 6 yards. A Wilson-to-Bethel 6-yard score with 2:05 remaining in the game put the game out of reach.

Piedmont hosts Ohatchee in Class 3A Region 6 play on Friday.
