Gaylesville ground game too much for Donoho to handle

Staff Reports

GAYLESVILLE – Gaylesville running backs Alex Baty and Jack Sentell churned out the yards and the touchdowns on Friday night against visiting Donoho.

Baty ran for 235 yards on 26 carries and found the end zone four times, while Sentell accumulated 175 yards on 10 totes with two scores to lead the Trojans to a 42-28 victory in the football season opener for both teams.

The win was Gaylesville’s first on the field since Oct. 28, 2022 – a 54-14 victory at Talladega County Central. It was also the first home win for the Trojans since a 24-14 decision over Decatur Heritage on Oct. 14, 2022, and the Trojans’ first season-opening victory since a 38-30 decision over Whitesburg Christian to open the 2021 season.

“It’s huge,” Gaylesville coach Brian Knapp said. “The mindset and the preparation is always better coming off a win. We think we came out injury-free, but we have a quick turnaround this week. We play on Thursday at Asbury. Hopefully we can have another great night come next Thursday.”

Sentell also led the Trojan defense with six tackles and an interception. Hunter Allmond added five stops and also picked off a pass. Timmy Dawson also delivered five tackles.

Baty, Karrson Ray and Collin Hendon each had four tackles. Aydn Heinreich and Ben Henderson both had three tackles, with Henderson adding a sack.
