Alabama Crimson Tide Charging For Autographs On Fan Day On August 11th

Changes have been made to preseason operations at three universities, including Alabama’s Fan Day, ESPN reported Friday.

Fans will be able to watch the football team practice for free during Alabama’s Fan Day on August 11, but those wanting players’ autographs will have to open their wallets.

Autographs from the team will require a membership with the Yea Alabama collective, which start at $18 per month.

Nebraska and Ohio State are taking the extra step and charging admission for one or more of their preseason practices, which regularly attract between 60,000 to 80,000 spectators.

The goal is to collect cash for the universities’ respective NIL collectives.

Thilo Kunkel, associate professor at Temple University and researcher on NIL’s impact on college sports, said this is a creative way to add to the NIL pool.

“The concept is really interesting,” said Kunkel. “It’s basically top schools with brand value that can leverage that to generate extra funds. Even those top schools are facing the need to generate additional money because NIL compensation, as well as attracting players through NIL deals, is becoming more and more competitive.”
