Cherokee/DeKalb County 4-H Livestock Club Members Rack Up at 2024 State 4-H Livestock Quizbowl & Skillathon Competition
Members of the Cherokee/DeKalb County 4-H Livestock team competed in the State 4-H Livestock Quizbowl & Skillathon in January. This is an annual competition where 4-H members from all over Alabama come together to compete. The Quizbowl portion of the competition allows teams of 4-H members to show off what they know about animal science through a game-show type event.
The Skillathon allows the 4-H members to compete simultaneously as individuals and teams to identify breeds of animals, livestock feed, livestock equipment, and retail meat cuts. They also get to judge meat cuts, hay, and wool. This year, eight members of our Cherokee/DeKalb County 4-H Livestock Club participated in this competition. Our Senior Team consisted of Taylor Moses, Colson Moses, Colton Simpson, and Shelby Wright. Our Junior Team members were Cade Miller, Julianna Brooks, Clara Brooks, and Brooklyn Moses.
Our Cherokee/DeKalb County 4-H Livestock Club Skillathon Team Placings were as follows:
Junior Team – 3rd Place Team Evaluation, 2nd Place Team ID/Quality Assurance and 2nd Place Team Overall Senior Team – 1st Place Team Identification, 2nd Place Team Evaluation, 2nd Place Team Applied Exercises, and 1st Place Team Overall
Our Cherokee/DeKalb County 4-H Livestock Club Quizbowl Team Placings were as follows:
Junior Team – 2nd Place and Senior Team – 2nd Place
We also had several individual high placings in the Skillathon competition:
Taylor Moses – 1st place Individual Identification, 2nd place Individual Overall Colton Simpson – 3rd Place Individual Identification, 2nd place Individual Evaluation Shelby Wright – 4th place Individual Identification, 5th place Individual Overall Cade Miller – 8th Place Individual Overall (Junior) Julianna Brooks – the 9th Place Overall Individual (Junior)
The members of these teams are coached by Dr. Landon Marks, the Cherokee County Extension Coordinator for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Dr. Lauren Marks, Marks Animal Hospital, and led by Mrs. Anna Wright and Mrs. Amanda Simpson, 4-H Volunteer Leaders.
