Mr. Odell Hammett, age 86, of Gaylesville, AL, passed peacefully with his family around him on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Atrium Health Floyd.

Mr. Hammett was born January 20, 1937, in Cherokee County, AL, son of the late Milus and Estelle Hammett.

 

 He was a member of New Hope Independent Church and was a farmer.  Mr. Hammett was the original owner and operator of the Menlo Restaurant and Burger Shack in Centre, Rainsville, and Summerville.  He was also the developer of Island Subdivision and Ball Play Creek Subdivision, Cedar Bluff.  Mr. Hammett loved to coon hunt and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Milus Odell “Dale” Hammett, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Crowe Hammett; daughter, Cindy (Billy Don) DeBerry; son, Jeffrey (Kim) Hammett; sisters, Faye (George) Wood, Colleen (Franklin) Early; grandchildren, Katlin (Andrew) Lindsey, Sydney (Josh) Sanford, Lauren (DaKota) Lambert, Trey DeBerry, Emily DeBerry, Jon Hammett, Meagan (Richard) Rubright, Josh (Lauren) Cannon; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside and interment services will be held at 11:00 A.M. (GA Time) Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Alpine Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Hammett officiating.  Pallbearers will be grandsons and include Trey DeBerry, Jon Hammett, Josh Cannon, Richard RuBright, Josh Sanford, Andrew Lindsey, DaKota Lambert, and Jimmy Early.

There will be no visitation.

The family respectfully requests no food, and in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alpine Cemetery Fund.
