City Of Centre To Pay For Life Guard Certifications

During the City Council meeting on Tuesday afternoon, the Centre City Council approved for the payment of Certification of new lifeguards provided they sign a two year contract to work for the City. The Council was informed they were having an issue getting young people certified due to the cost of the certification. Mayor Mansfield and the Council feels this will help the City fill its need for lifeguards at the City’s new Aquatic Center.

The Aquatic Center will be getting a camera system with 13 cameras to be installed around the Center including the area where money is being received. The cost of the new system is $9840.

The quarterly reports were given from department heads. Building Inspector, Raymond Matthews told the Council there have been 6 commercial building permits issued for $1,183, 693.25 which the City retained $1634. There were 23 building permits for residential construction for a total cost of $504134.25 which the City retained $1635. There were 6 sign permits for a value $3956 which the City retained $45. The total value of all permits were $1,691,784.50. Matthews told the Council everything the Aquatic Center is still being checked on with water quality being checked on constantly.

Police Chief Kirk Blankenship gave the police report with 200 Incident and offense reports issued, 132 arrests, 185 cases closed, investigated 37 traffic accidents, 709 warning tickets issued, and 80 citations issued.

The Council approved a contract with AVENU Insights for collection of business license and renewed the contract with AVENU Insights for the collection of lodging taxes.

Phyllis Jones met with the Council asking for a Farmers Market Committee from the Council to assist her with the Farmers Market Operation. She said now they operate under the State’s Guidelines but ask the City to adopt rules governing the operation. The Mayor and Council agreed to create the Committee under the Activity Committee Chaired by Councilmember Bess Yarbrough.

Council Member Don Cochran announced Jay Wilson has been hired as the Parks and Rec Manager. Mayor Mansfield said Wilson is to begin Thursday.
