Heavy Storms Likely for Alabama this Weekend

Heavy storms will likely be in the weather forecast for Alabama this weekend.

There will be a Level 1 out of 5 risk for the northern part of the state Saturday, and according to forecasters from NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, on Sunday, a larger part of the state will have a Level 2 risk.  Much of the state will have a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather on Sunday.

A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible – a Level 2 risk means the severe storms could be more numerous.

The strongest storms could have wind gusts as high as 60 mph, hail and heavy rain, fortunately the tornado threat is low.

The National Weather Service thinks the best chance for severe storms will be during the afternoon and evening hours, on both Saturday and Sunday.

A weather disturbance is expected to bring potential for storms to areas mainly along and north of the Interstate 59 corridor on Saturday.  The strongest of those could likely include damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.

Storms are expected to be a bit more numerous on Sunday, as a cold front approaches Alabama.

The weather service said a very moist air mass will continue to blanket the state over the weekend, and storms could drop a lot of rain in a short amount of time.

There will be a low-end risk for flash flooding in some areas.
