Cherokee County saw some severe weather last (Wednesday) night with the National Weather Service issuing a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at approximately 8:45.

Between that time and around 10:30 – high winds caused a number of trees to topple with the southwestern corner of the county catching the brunt of the system.

Reports came in from near and far – with trees being down on County Road 71 in the Woods Bend community; County Road 2 in Sand Rock; on Highway 9 south of Centre, near Mark’s Grocery; on County Road 7 at Gilley Road in Etowah County; and we had a report of a tree being across a power line, at the intersection of County Roads 8 and 33 which required crews of Cherokee Electric to respond; and a mobile home received major damage in the Wood’s Bend community.

Fire Departments from across Cherokee County were extremely busy throughout the time.

At this point, we’ve had no reports of anyone being injured overnight.
