Cherokee Health & Rehab Opens New Training Facility for Nurses

PRESS RELEASE

Cherokee County Health & Rehab Center has opened a new training facility for nurses and nursing assistants to ensure its health care workers have the special skills they need to work in long-term care.

“We’re investing in education with the Skills Development and Training Center,” Administrator Donnie Lowe said. “Our objective is to have highly qualified personnel to provide care for our residents at CCHRC.”

Long-term care facilities face a challenge in recruiting and retaining nurses and nurses’ aides. In addition to offering competitive pay, CCHRC gives new hires admission to its certified nursing assistant program, and enrollees get paid while they go to class. During CNA training, students undergo a week of classroom instruction followed by a week of hands-on work in a clinical setting.

“Education can empower our employees and give stability to our work force,” Lowe said. “We want to give nurses the support they need because they are at the heart of the care we provide residents.”

The training building, which formerly housed the Human Resources Department, underwent renovations to accommodate the needs of health care instruction.

“We have more room now, and it’s more private with fewer distractions,” Education Coordinator Kelly Hutchins said.

Classrooms are outfitted with medical equipment, and one room is glass-enclosed to allow students to observe procedures in progress.

From learning how to take vital signs to moving a resident safely from bed to a medical recliner chair, students focus on the special needs of residents.

“It’s important for us to know exactly what’s going on with residents. We need to know about a resident who may need help eating, or a resident who is not eating and drinking,” Director of Nursing Jennifer Cambron said. “Careful monitoring is vital to the care we give.”

Lowe said training ensures residents receive the best care.

“Training is a vital part of our mission at CCHRC,” he said.
