WEAVER – The Cherokee County soccer teams swept Weaver on its senior night on Friday. The Warrior boys improved to 8-4 on the season with a 6-0 victory. The Lady Warriors earned a 3-2 victory, giving them their fourth win in five matches and improving their record to 4-8.

In the boys match, Tanner Young and Andrew Morrison scored two goals apiece. Josue and Yestin Mejia scored one goal each. Daniel Mejia and Tanner Young led the team with two assists apiece.

Tucker Neyman earned his third shutout of the season.

“I think we possessed the ball for about 70 percent of the game and moved it at will at times,” Warrior coach Matthew Pharr said. “We’ve got to be more efficient with our scoring chances, but I think that’s something we can work and improve on. Tanner Young was a workhorse and our defenders Colin Givens, Will Frampton, Ben Frampton, Alex Greenwood and Alex McCord all stifled their attack all night.”

In the girls match, juniors Emalee Morrison, Jalyn Ballenger and Ella Clifton scored to give the Lady Warriors the edge.

“This was an 80-minute battle,” Pharr said. “There was nothing easy about this game for either team. We were just lucky to be the team to find the back of the net more times. As a coach, you enjoy winning, because it gives the team such positive gratification,  but seeing a first-year player score their first goal is what this is all about.

“Jalyn is busting her tail at practice every day and never makes excuses or complains. For her to get some positive gratification like that is awesome to see. I’ve been so proud of this team. All of these girls have worked so hard to find some success. It’s great to see it pay off for them.”

Both Warrior teams host Etowah on Tuesday, beginning with the girls match at 4 p.m.
