CENTRE – The Cherokee County High School boys soccer team won its second match of the season in overtime Thursday. They defeated visiting Boaz 4-3 on a penalty kick shootout.

The Warriors, now 2-1 in area play, rallied from three goals down in the second half. Daniel Mejia scored two goals and Giorgio Guzetta added another to tie the match and force overtime.

In overtime, Yefri Mejia, Yestin Mejia and Josue Mejia made penalty kicks. Tucker Neyman made three saves in the shootout.

“We had a rough start to the game, giving up two goals in the first half and another in the second half to go down 3-0,” Warrior head coach Matthew Pharr said. “But with 20 minutes in the game, we noticed a change in our guys. We changed our formation and game plan and the boys responded the way any coach hopes their team will.

“Daniel Mejia, Tanner Young, Josue Mejia and Giorgio Guzzetta really led us in this game. All of those guys were cramping. They were battling tired legs from workouts this week. I’m grateful to have a group of guys like that to rely on.

“Antonio Hernandez did a good job in his first start to keep us in the game. I think he had something like eight saves for us. Tucker Neyman came in for the shootout and just like last time (at Douglas) came up huge for us. We’re really proud of this team and excited to be sitting in the top half of the table midway through the season.”

Cherokee County plays Guntersville on Monday.
