CENTRE – At Throwback Night at the Warrior Dome, Mary Hayes Johnson scored 29 points to lead the Cherokee County Lady Warriors to an 82-35 basketball win over Fort Payne on Tuesday. The Warrior boys fell by the final of 71-65.
Audrey Haygood added 18 points for the Lady Warriors (14-6). Audrey Green netted 16 points. Ella Garmany finished with five points.
In the boys game, Jack Amos led the Warriors (10-11) with 28 points, including six 3-pointers (four in the fourth quarter). Jayden Wilson added 13 points, including a 9-of-9 performance from the free-throw line. Landon Caldwell contributed 12 points, and Jackson Neyman finished with five points.
Connor Cash topped the Wildcats with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Eli Kirby added 14 points, including three treys. Malik Turner tallied 10 points. Marcus Ledford finished with eight points.
Fort Payne held a 15-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors pulled in front 33-32 at halftime, but the Wildcats surged ahead 50-45 by the end of the third quarter.
Cherokee County travels to Etowah on Friday.
