Superintendent of Education Mike Welsh Issues Statement Regarding School Lockdown on Friday

Cherokee County High School was placed on lockdown this afternoon after reports were made of possible gunshots heard near campus.

There is no indication that anything took place on campus or directed at campus.

On Friday afternoon, Cherokee County Superintendent of Education issued the following statement;

The lockdown was simply initiated to ensure the safety of all students and staff members out of an abundance of caution. Campuses nearby, including Centre Elementary, Centre Middle, and the Career Technology Center, were placed on soft lockdown, again out of an abundance of caution. Students at all campuses were dismissed on a regular schedule.

Cherokee County Schools appreciates the cooperation of all staff members, students, and parents during this situation. We are also very appreciative of SROs Jordan Kelley and Kasey West, the Cherokee County Sheriffs Office, the Centre Police Department, and school administration for their quick response and help in maintaining the safety of all students and staff members.
