Sheriff Jeff Shaver Discusses COVID Safety Protocol at Cherokee County Detention Center

In light of the recent reports of a rising number of COVID cases – not only in Alabama, but across the nation as well – we’ve had inquiries regarding safety procedures being observed at the Cherokee County Detention Center.

On Friday morning, we spoke with Sheriff Jeff Shaver about the intake process and he told us that during booking, all subjects are screened and there is a detailed protocol to be followed by all employees prior to placing anyone in jail – that includes various points such as temperature checks and so on and his staff is concentrating on making sure all those incarcerated are not placed at risk health-wise.

He stressed that last year during the height of the pandemic, and although some staff members contracted COVID, the jail population itself never had any type of COVID-19 breakout.

He also pointed out that should any inmate contract COVID – quarantine is available, and the jail has medical staff to provide whatever services may be needed.

He also stated that the safety of everyone, staff and inmates alike – is the top priority at the Sheriff’s Office and at the Detention Center.
