Jill Hawkins with Floyd Medical Discusses “National Sleep Awareness Week” and More

It’s something almost everyone suffers from these days – to the point where most of us just take it for granted – and that’s lack of sleep:

That’s Jill Hawkins, the Administrator of the Floyd Sleep Centers; she and Dan Bevels, Floyd Public Relations Manager, joined WEIS Radio Morning Show Host Jerry Baker via telephone on Tuesday to discuss “National Sleep Awareness Week”, going on now – and the important benefits of adequate sleep.

The consequences of not getting quality rest or sleep, can be far-reaching; Ms. Hawkins has suggestions regarding setting a pattern before going to bed:

The Sleep Centers at Floyd in Rome and in Cherokee County are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine – and are staffed by board-certified physicians that’ll work with you to analyze, and diagnose sleep-related health issues.  Sleep studies are available, during which information pertaining to specific physical activities is collected electronically during sleep.

Information gathered includes blood oxygen levels, brain activity, eye movement, breathing patterns and more.

Certified technologists use patient sleep and medical histories along with a comprehensive sleep study to diagnose sleep-related issues. Staff members use video cameras and specialized equipment to assess sleep states and behaviors, such as:

  • Blood oxygen levels

What is a sleep study?

A sleep study, or polysomnogram (PSG), is a multiple-part test. During the test, information is collected electronically about specific physical activities while you sleep. This information will be reviewed by a board-certified sleep specialist to determine whether or not you have a sleep disorder.

What happens during a sleep study?

Certified sleep specialists use patient sleep and medical histories along with a complete sleep study to diagnose sleep-related issues. Staff members use video cameras and specialized equipment to assess sleep states and behaviors, such as:

  • Blood oxygen levels
  • Brain activity
  • Breathing patterns
  • Eye movements
  • Heart rate
  • Leg movements

Patients spend the night in a comfortable environment, equipped with Sleep Number mattresses and hotel amenities.

Will I have to sleep overnight at the hospital?

If the board certified sleep specialists determines you need to have a sleep study, it is usually done as an outpatient at the Floyd Sleep Center. There are some situations where home sleep studies are ordered. Home sleep studies are only used to diagnose or rule out obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Not all patients are good candidates for a home test and not all insurance carriers will cover the cost of the study. If you need a sleep study, one of our physicians will make a recommendation based on your specific situation on whether you should have a test done in the lab or at home.

What types of insurance plans are accepted?

We participate in and accept most major health care insurance plans.

If my child needs a sleep study, can I stay with him/her?

Yes. It is required that you stay overnight with your minor child when he/she has a sleep study.
