COLLINSVILLE – Another area high school football game has been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Friday’s Class 3A, Region 7 contest, Collinsville at Brindlee Mountain, has been cancelled due to the Lions being in quarantine. Collinsville made the announcement via social media on Tuesday morning.

It’s the third game the Lions (0-4, 0-2) have had to forfeit this season. They forfeited their season opener on Aug. 21 at Holly Pond. Following a 48-6 loss to Douglas on Aug. 27, Brindlee Mountain forfeited last Friday’s Region 7 contest at Sylvania.

“It’s not really how we wanted to get to 3-1 (1-1 in region play), but that’s where we’re at,” Collinsville coach Daniel Garrett said.

Garrett said he’d been hearing rumors the Lions might have to postpone or cancel the game with Collinsville on Friday morning. He has been in contact with Brindlee Mountain coach Keith Garner over the weekend concerning their game with each other.

“We talked yesterday (Monday) and he said he still didn’t know. Today, they called our principal and said they can’t play,” Garrett said. “They would like to reschedule, but there’s no date to reschedule because their bye week and our bye week don’t match, so they’re going to have forfeit.

“It is what it is. I don’t think they have that many players. They had to forfeit the first game because they didn’t have enough. It wasn’t anything to do with COVID. That’s how it happened and that’s where we are.”

It’s the second time over the Labor Day weekend in which an area team’s game has been cancelled against a region opponent. Class 2A Spring Garden had its scheduled Region 6 game for this Friday at Locust Fork cancelled on Sunday.

Garrett said he had been in contact with other schools about a replacement game, but said “Right now, on Tuesday, we’re just focused on us.”

“That’s just kind of where we’re at,” he said. “We’re looking forward to our next game against Sylvania next week (Sept. 18).”
