Piedmont Council Meeting

It was a relatively brief meeting of the Piedmont City Council on Tuesday, which saw a few routine agenda items being approved by city officials.

The council committed $36,708 to the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission to continue participating in its public transportation program for another year. A portion of that payment will go toward the purchase of a new van to be used by Piedmont residents.

Brian Young was appointed to serve as a member of the Piedmont City School Board.

Bills for payment were approved in the amount of $302,005.96.

During the council comments portion of the meeting, Council Member Greg South called on Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and the state government to allow small businesses to begin reopening, so that business owners will be able to “make a living.”

He went on to criticize the seeming double standard of allowing larger corporate-owned businesses to continue to operate, while forcing locally-owned businesses to close. “It’s time for the state to make things fair for all individuals,” South said, adding, “It’s not fair for our state to determine who fails and who succeeds.”

The next regular Piedmont City Council Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19th, immediately following the work session, which is set for 5:30pm.
