Piedmont City Council Approves Demo at Future Burger King Location

Following a public hearing on Tuesday, the Piedmont City Council, approved a resolution authorizing the demolition of a building, paving the way for the construction of a new Burger King.

A former car wash, located on U.S. 278 will soon be torn down to make way for the restaurant. The demolition was part of an incentive package that the Piedmont Commercial Development Authority offered Burger King to locate on the site.

Rick Freeman, of the Piedmont Veterans Association, was on hand to update the city on the recently initiated Veteran Marker Project, the group’s plan to honor local veterans with a permanent display at Veterans Memorial Park.

The display will be made up of 12×12 inch granite markers, which can be purchased and engraved with a veterans name and details about his/her service. The markers will then be placed in cement and become a permanent feature of the park.

Freeman said that 45 markers have been sold so far, with many more committed, surpassing the initial goal of 30.

The markers can be purchased on behalf of any current or past service member by calling 256-792-9299.

According to Freeman, the marker project is just one aspect of the group’s larger Veterans Memorial Park Project, which is an effort to bring several key upgrades the park in the coming year.

In other business, bills for payment were approved in the amount of $440,526.57.

The 2020 Holiday Schedule was approved.

The council also congratulated the Piedmont Bulldog football team for winning the 2019 AHSAA Class 3A State Championship.

The next regular Piedmont City Council Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 7th, immediately following the work session, which is set for 5:30pm.
