Third Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder in County Road 22 Shooting Now in Custody; Bond Set

The third suspect wanted on charges of Attempted Murder in connection with the shooting incident on County Road 22 earlier in the week is now in custody.

Cherokee County Chief Deputy Josh Summerford said that 54 year old Michael A. Gilreath of Rome was taken into custody between 6:30 and 7:30pm Thursday, on County Road 16 near the s-curves at the bridge.  Gilreath was arrested without incident, after being spotted in the creek by Sheriff Shaver.

Officers with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Deputies with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office assisted Cherokee County authorities in the manhunt by providing K-9 Units.

Cherokee County Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a home in the Kirk’s Grove community around 10:00 Monday night – arriving to find a subject suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head.  The unnamed victim was taken by Redmond EMS to an area hospital where he immediately underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.

Investigators took two suspects into custody Tuesday afternoon at a home on Highway 9 in the Ellisville community.  Anthony Matthew Gilreath of Centre, 29, and Stephen Eric Parker, 47 from Lindale, Georgia were transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center where they were each booked in on a charge of Attempt to Commit Murder.

According to records at the Cherokee County Detention Center, bond for all three subjects has been set at $200,000 each.

Chief Deputy Summerford said additional information would be released at a later time – as this is an on-going investigation.

At this point, no information regarding a possible motive for the shooting has been given.
