Here Is The Latest Update From EMA Director Shawn Rogers Regarding Winter Weather

Overall, not much has changed since the previous update in regards to the amount of snowfall across the area. The biggest threat remains to be the possibility of the early snowfall possibly melting and refreezing on the roadways.  Behind an arctic cold front will be increasing moisture that will fall in the form of SNOW. Most of the models are now in agreement with the timing of the system. Look for it to begin in the NW between 6 and 8 am and then slowly move southeast during the morning and into the afternoon.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Cherokee County from 6:00 a.m. Tuesday until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday in addition to a Hard Freeze Watch which will most likely be upgraded to a warning at some point. We talked with the ALDOT Supervisor for our area and he has informed us that all the state routes have been pretreated.

  • County Engineer Corey Chambers says that all slag trucks are loaded and ready and the county snowplow is also prepped and ready when needed.
  • Cherokee County Schools will be closed Tuesday.
  • Probate Judge / Commission Chairman Tim Burgess said that all county offices will open at normal time, but may close as weather conditions warrant.

What to Expect – Snow is expected with high confidence. Plan on road conditions to deteriorate rapidly as the snow begins to fall, especially during the evening commute on Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of one quarter to one half inches are expected, with locally higher totals of up to one inch.

Timeframe for Cherokee County – From 10 A.M. –  9 P.M. Tuesday. Any accumulation on Tuesday will be here on Wednesday due to the sub-freezing temperatures overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday.

Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times. A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

We will provide frequent updates throughout the day Tuesday and Wednesday, be sure to check our Facebook page and Twitter feed. Also, check the WEIS Radio, Post Centre and Cherokee County Herald social media sites for updates as well.
