“Thor: Ragnarok” thunders to $121 million opening weekend

Marvel – 2017(NEW YORK) — Thor: Ragnarok conquered the weekend box office with an estimated $120 million opening. The film — starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo and Jeff Goldblum — posted the seventh largest domestic opening for a film in Marvel’s cinematic universe, topping Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s $117 million debut.

The film, which opened overseas last week, raked in an estimated $330 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $427 million. Marvel and ABC are owned by Disney.

A Bad Moms Christmas — starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn — bowed in second place with an estimated $17 million haul. Jigsaw took third place, earning an estimated $6.7 million.

In fourth place was Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, with an estimated $4.65 million take.

Geostorm rounded out the top five, pulling in an estimated $3 million.

Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, took in an estimated $375,612 from four theaters — the best showing this year for a film opening in limited release, topping The Big Sick‘s $284,315 back in June.
