Getty Images for Tony Awards Productions/Mike Coppola(LOS ANGELES) — Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins has been tapped to star in Spike Lee and Jordan Peele’supcoming thriller, Black Klansman.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hawkins will play prominent civil right activist Stokely Carmichael, who was later known as Kwame Ture.
Hawkins joins Ballers star John David Washington and Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Laura Harrier in Black Klansman. Topher Grace and Adam Driver have also been added to the cast, with Grace’s role reported to be that of a white supremacist.
The film, which is inspired by the memoir of Ron Stallworth, a police detective who infiltrated the KKK in 1978, tells the detective’s story of how he gained membership to the Klan and eventually “rose through the ranks to become the head of the local chapter.”
Lee will direct and co-produce along with Peele and Get Out‘s Jason Blumhouse of Blumhouse Productions.
Hawkins most recently starred as Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton, and headlined the short-lived 24: Legacy TV reboot.
