Authorities Investigating A Deputy Involved Shooting In Piedmont

Authorities in Cherokee and Etowah Counties along with the Center for Applied Forensics are in charge of an investigation after a Calhoun County deputy shot and killed a man this morning in Piedmont.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said the incident was a scuffle over the deputy’s weapon.

Sheriff Wade said that the incident occurred at 4:46 a.m. on Helen Drive in Piedmont; a deputy responded to a call of a ‘suspicious person’ and arrived to find a man in his early 30s at residence. It appears that the man had been living at the residence with the owner for about 10 days after his car broke down.

Sheriff Wade said that the deputy preformed a routine ‘status’ check on the man and discovered that he had a felony warrant out of Pell City, as the deputy was patting the man down he managed to obtain one of the deputies sidearms and an altercation ensued which escalated to the point of the deputy having to shoot the suspect.

The man, whose name is not being released at this time, was taken to Jacksonville Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The deputy was not seriously injured.

Sheriff Wade said the incident is under investigation by the Etowah and Cherokee County sheriff’s departments, as well as the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics.
