Idris Elba as The Gunslinger in “The Dark Tower”; Ilze Kitshoff © 2016 CTMG, Inc.(NEW YORK) — Projections are that The Dark Tower will debut with between $20 million and $25 million this weekend, and so far it’s off to a good start.

The movie adaptation of the Stephen King book series took in an estimated $1.8 million in Thursday night previews at 2,770 movie theaters.  It’ll add about another 700 theaters for its official opening today.

The Dark Tower stars Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, who’s locked in an eternal battle with the Man in Black — played by Matthew McConaughey — to keep him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together.

The Dark Tower’s expected to debut at #1 at the box office as the summer movie season winds down, with Dunkirk dropping to second in its third weekend out.

The only other new films opening in wide release this weekend are the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap, which is expected to debut with around $8 million, and the critically-praised Detroit, which is expanding to wide release.
